An iconic tropical holiday destination situated within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based private equity firm for a sum reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.

“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication of the family owners has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.

Details of the Sale

Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard approvals from regulators.

The sellers released a statement noting they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

The Island's Size and Amenities

Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.

Roughly thirty percent of the land is developed, including a substantial array of facilities:

• Five hotels
• Over twenty dining and drinking venues
• Twenty shops and retail spaces
• An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
• A boat marina and a commercial airport

Hamilton Island is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.

Historical Context at Ownership

The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.

Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.

The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage

The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
