The distinctive yellow-colored residential building in the background helped us locate the video.
Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs posted earlier today that depict the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to verify the site from which the pictures were from was based on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
