Gavin Newsom States He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028

Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure, has revealed that he plans to make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections conclude.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest otherwise," Newsom stated when questioned about contemplating a campaign for president following the 2026 ballots. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."

Newsom's current term as California's leader wraps up in early 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he cautioned that any decision is not imminent.

"It's up to destiny," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic

The California governor has emerged as a high-profile opponent of the Trump administration, leveraging his social media accounts and pushing a ballot measure that would increase the party's House seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has made him a target from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a Sunday appearance on a major news network. Duffy revealed plans to pull federal funds from the state and suggested eliminating the power to issue CDLs.

"I intend to cut $160m from California," Duffy stated, after a this week's deadly accident in California involving an non-citizen commercial driver that led to fatalities and casualties.

The governor's team noted that the national authorities had approved the individual's authorization multiple times, which allowed him to secure a commercial driver's license under federal law.

The transportation secretary had previously announced he was blocking $40 million from the state for ignoring language proficiency rules for CDL holders.

Strong Response from the Administration

"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," his administration retorted in a recent statement responding to the funding warnings. "For now, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: California CDL holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."

Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects

A this month's survey found that a majority of the party and almost half of voters indicated that the governor should run for president in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has risen to an mean of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an average of more than 40% to current figures.

Earlier this year, the governor stated while on a trip several swing states that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He noted his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.

"The idea that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, alone, remarkable," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I await who emerges in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the American people."
