Daughter of Former South African Leader Jacob G Zuma Rejects Terror Allegations as Trial Begins
The child of previous South African President Jacob G Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related allegations at the start of her court case in the harbor city of Durban city.
Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being charged over statements she posted on social media in the past during fatal demonstrations in South Africa that came after the arrest of her parent.
A period of anarchy in various areas of the country in the summer of 2021, including theft and arson, resulted in at least 300 individuals dead and resulted in damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (2.2 billion pounds).
She has been alleged of inciting this violence and confronts accusations of incitement to commit terror acts and civil unrest.
Context of the Legal Matter
The protests were concentrated in the regions of Gauteng region and KZN and were triggered by the ex-leader's detention for disobeying a judicial ruling to give evidence at an investigation into claims of corruption while he was in power.
She has repeatedly denied the accusations against her, with her legal representative earlier labelling the state's case as insufficient.
She has also consistently said the charges against her were an bid to address political scores with her dad after he started his own political organization and competed against the ruling party.
Support and Legal Defense
This was echoed by the foundation, which stated the case was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and kinship persecution" against the former president and his relatives.
A few of followers from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her dad and other group representatives were present at the court sessions inside.
The defendant's representatives has maintained that the evidence presented by government lawyers is unconvincing and fails to provide compelling evidence for a guilty verdict.
