Arnaud Kalimuendo Fires as Nottingham Forest Secure Nostalgic Win Over Malmö
“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” echoed around the City Ground as Nottingham Forest followers reveled in a further win against Malmö. Much has occurred since Francis's decisive header clinched the European Cup back in 1979, but the club continue to cherish those memories. Equally, significant shifts have occurred in the five weeks since Sean Dyche took charge, with the team appearing reinvigorated and earning a comfortable victory thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, enhancing their prospects of advancing in the European competition.
Gaining Momentum with Third Straight Win
For Forest, this performance – against a Swedish side that had been inactive for almost three weeks after ending in sixth place in their domestic league – marked a third consecutive triumph across all competitions and added to the momentum gained from last weekend’s success at Anfield. While this fixture was a reminder of the club's historic success in spirit, the encounter itself was devoid of any significant tension or jitters.
This was an event filled with nostalgia, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third clash between the sides since the European Cup final over four decades past.
Forest fully embraced the heritage, paying tribute to the legends of that era by providing them, along with their visiting counterparts, the red-carpet treatment. 13 members of the Malmö's team from that time were additionally in attendance. The two clubs enjoyed a dinner together prior to the kick-off. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and company received a rousing welcome when they gathered on the pitch 15 minutes before kick-off, and a typically superb display was shown in the Trent End.
Remembering the Past
“May 30, 1979, John Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” read one part of a giant banner, in capital letters. While nobody required a reminder of what ensued, the rest was unfurled as the squads came out from the tunnel. “There is Francis,” it continued. Another brilliant display showed Brian Clough observing proceedings beside his assistant Taylor on a bench at the Munich stadium.
Control from the Outset
So, the hosts had drunk in those wonderful recollections, but what about the showing on the night? It was impressive, as well. They were in complete control from the moment Kalimuendo whistled an attempt off target inside the opening moments and established a 2-0 advantage by the break. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Zach Abbott, on his first European start, had a go.
It felt fitting that Ryan Yates, who came to Forest as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the Malmö defense led by their own homegrown captain, Jansson, formerly of Leeds United and Brentford FC. The home centre-back Milenkovic saw a cross cannon off a opponent and into the pathway of Yates, who finished right-footed from just inside the penalty area to register his first goal since last March.
Another Goal Seals Dominance
The scorer was involved in the team's second goal on the brink of the interval, too, his free header saved by Malmö’s shot-stopper Melker Ellborg but Kalimuendo on hand to tap in the loose ball from point-blank range. McAtee, the midfielder given a rare start and only his second outing since September, was the catalyst, chipping a perfect ball towards his teammate at the back post.
A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi low effort was deflected wide off the defender Colin Rösler, son of ex- Manchester City forward Uwe, and an free the defender also earlier had a powerful header smartly saved by Ellborg, who returned in place of the former Villa goalkeeper Olsen.
Malmö’s Difficulties
This was the Swedish side's initial game since the domestic league ended on November 9th, and they found it hard to equal the home team's intensity. The Reds extended the lead to three when the defender scored after his centre-back partner Murillo kept alive a set-piece. The captain had a shot blocked, but the Serbia centre-back Milenkovic pounced on the rebound.
The home side then went for the jugular, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a right-foot shot on to the bar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an ambitious shot off target from 30 yards. It was that kind of evenings. Dyche, mindful of Sunday’s domestic fixture here against Brighton & Hove Albion, implemented multiple alterations from the team that stunned Liverpool at their ground last weekend, when they also netted three goals, though he introduced substitutes and Igor Jesus midway through the second half.
Smooth Evening for Forest
It proved a flawless night for Forest. The coach could take off the defender with the game already boxed off and later introduced 19-year-old full-back Sinclair for his senior bow. He talked about the Forest old guard supplying “valuable insights” at regular meetings and, almost five decades on, the present squad showed they are able of producing of thrills, as well.
